This order includes the praying mantises, which appeared about 20 million years ago. They are large insects, 40-80 mm long, with two forewings and two hindwings that are widely developed. The hindwings are glass-like and only at the anterior margin on the tips are pale green or light brown. The forewings are elongated tubular and on the inside of the pelvic bones of the forewings there is a black spot, often with a light brown spot in the middle. The forewings are blade-shaped, with toothed inner edges, used for capturing prey and fighting enemies.
